Man charged with murder in fight that started with dog peeing on couch

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The man accused of killing his soon-to-be brother-in-law during an argument about a dog has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.

The July term of the Montgomery County Grand Jury indicted Army Sgt. Scott Alan Haynes Jr., 25, on the charges, and he was arrested Monday.

Haynes is charged with killing Austin Moss, 24, on Nov. 20, 2020, on Blakemore Drive, off Whitfield Road in St. Bethlehem.

According to earlier testimony from Jessica Harris, Moss and Harris were soon to be married. Haynes Jr.’s wife, Kristen Haynes, is Harris’ sister.

Kristen Haynes had invited Moss, Harris and Harris’ daughter to live with them temporarily after the three of them relocated from Texas, Harris testified.

Five days after Moss and Harris arrived, Haynes Jr. and Moss had a fight over a dog peeing on their couch.

Haynes Jr. told the couple to they had to move out, then said he was going to get his gun, according to earlier testimony. As he was coming back upstairs with the gun, he fired a shot that hit Moss and just missed Harris.

Moss is survived by his parents and a son, Remy, in Sabine County, Texas, according to DailyNewsandMore.com in Hemphill, Texas.
