It’s called the “unapproachable” makeup technique and it’s trending big-time. The goal is to be “unapproachable” to men when you go out. The theory is that the better you look, the less you will be approached by men because they will think you’re “out of their league”.
So where is the fine line between looking good and looking “unapproachable”? It seems the unapproachable look is very heavy-handed. Think 80’s. At least that’s what you immediately think of when you see how much makeup we’re talking about here. There is nothing natural or subtle about this look. Do you remember the mannequin-looking models behind Robert Palmer in the video “Addicted to Love”? That seems to resemble some of the images and tutorials seen so far.
But with this trend, it’s about much more than contouring and winged eyeliner.
According to THIS article from msn.com,
“Although the trend is gaining momentum on Tiktok, Gen Z women appear to using ‘intimidating makeup looks’ to ward off men for a more profound reason, according to Hope Flynn, founder of FeedMeFemale.
Flynn told MailOnline: “The makeup trend has a deeper meaning than just a new way to highlight or contour your face.
“It is symbolic of women making a stand – it is their armor to protect themselves from perpetrators who deliberately harass, alarm, and distress them when they are out in public spaces.” ‘
I’ve always found the opposite to be true – more makeup means more attention but perhaps it’s a generational thing?
