Parents, Stop Doing Your Kids Projects For Them!

So last week my daughters school gave a weekend homework assignment, they wanted each kid to paint a small pumpkin and bring it back that they can display as decorations around the school.

So my daughter comes home and we gather a collection of paints. Hot pink, Neon Green, Gold, Silver, and Electric Blue. I asked her if she wants to draw anything on it, she says no, grabs a brush, hands me one, and we just start slathering paint on it. We laughed, painted each others faces, painted the pumpkin, and just had a great time bonding.

The next day when I go to pick her up, I start seeing all these perfectly crafted pumpkins, like the one you see above. Perfectly drawn and painted. Hot glued items like witches and witch hats. Perfectly spelled words. You know, typical 2-6 year old type things. WRONG.

This isn’t mom and dad craft time. This is suppose to be something your KIDS do. How are you helping them by doing it yourself? The good thing out of this was I was able to explain to my daughter that art is subjective and it doesn’t HAVE to be perfect. Sometimes perfection can be found in imperfection.
